Course outline

Integrative design is distinguished from conventional design by its use of a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary project team. This presentation by Bill Reed introduces the practical concepts of integrating our technical perspectives with the living system processes that support life on Earth. The beginning of this work in the design and building professions is to start the process of integrating the inter-relationships between subsystems in the building and the natural systems of which the building is part.

AACA Competency: Project Delivery

Presenter/Author

Bill Reed, Principal: Regenesis Pty Ltd

An internationally recognized proponent and practitioner of sustainability, Bill Reed is president of the Integrative Design Collaborative - a consulting organization working to evolve green building design practice into an approach that is fully integrated with living systems. He is a principal of the regenerative planning firm Regenesis and the strategic environmental planning firm Integrative Design.

His work centres on managing and creating frameworks for integrative, whole-systems design processes. Learning outcome

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • How the Integrated Design Process differs from traditional design
  • Identify specific characteristics of Integrated Design and its implications building energy performance
  • Explain the differences between linear and technical system approaches and pattern-based, whole and living system based approaches and explain why both approaches are essential to achieve a ‘sustainable’ condition
  • Implement ideas and practices to expand depth of client / architect / community interaction and greater scopes of work and client offerings
  • Identify the practice issues that need to change to achieve optimized and synergistic systems
  • Understand green design issues and the cost effective processes to attain them.
