Course outline

This seminar will provide a refresher on the work health and safety legislation in relation to designer responsibilities and discuss how designers can achieve a safe design approach in their projects.
The focus will include what designers should endeavour to eliminate from the workplace and design innovations which can create productive workplaces free from injury and disease. The seminar will address methods of communicating safe design in documents, plans and reports to ensure that design intent is not lost in the build process.

Deborah Hammond is one of Australia’s leading work health and safety (WHS) experts with more than 20 years’ experience working with a broad range of clients. Deborah created and facilitates the Safety in Design course for Consult Australia and also lectures in work health and safety for University of Sydney.

Deborah also develops WHS management systems and provides WHS auditing services. She has developed training on a range of WHS and injury management issues, including co-authoring the original WorkCover NSW Return to Work Coordination package.

    Learning outcome

    After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Understanding health and safety legislation relating to designers
  • Knowledge of workplace hazards and their harmful effects. What should designers eliminate from the built environment?
  • Design innovation to facilitate health of workers, in particular “hidden workers”
  • Awareness of risk analysis tools used in the built environment. Is it a design issue?
  • Different approaches to documenting “unusual or atypical features” in design i.e. the safety report.
